    The number of belts depends on the particular school and master. Some schools have more belts when training children. The important thing is that there are 10 student ranks before the black belt is earned. The belt colors in the 10 ranks (called kups, gups, or geups) differ from school to school and some may have more or less than 10. The standard is 10th gup is white, 8th is yellow, 6th is green, 4th is blue, 2nd is red, and 1st varies but is often red with a black stripe. Sometimes there will be a white strip added to a color to signify “senior” such as “senior blue” but again it depends on the school. If you go through a good school at a pretty good pace 3 or 3.5 years is not a bad estimate for the time to earn a black belt. Some schools are belt factories and they get kids through quicker. Some schools mix other martial arts in with the TKD and it takes longer.

    In short, as many as you are willing to pay for.

    The old system had only 4 belt colors, white, blue, brown, and black. Over the years they have added yellow, green and red so that makes 7. But, there is still more. Depending on your school and how much of their income is based on belt tests, you could add tips to each belt, bringing the number up to 14. But, some schools now have added more than one tip to each belt.

    The bottom line is that it depends on your school. It is not disrespectful to ask your teacher this sort of question. Or just look on the wall in the office, where the belt line is usually displayed.

    It goes;
    white
    yellow
    green
    blue
    red
    black,

    with a tag in between each.

    Expect it to take about 4 years to get the black belt, but don’t use it as an end. Black belt is just the start of the advanced training, then you work up the dans to 9th.

    It depends on the school. We have white, yellow, green, purple, brown & black. some have orange, blue & red in place of or in addition to yellow, purple & brown. Some have colors I can’t even describe. Ask your Sabuhnim.
